Wonderful Wellbeing: Essential Oils and Yoga

This week we’re talking essential oils and yoga. We’re big fans of yoga and how it helps for health and wellness. We’re also big fans of essential oils (of course). You may have noticed that some yoga teachers diffuse essential oils during class to enhance the uplifting experience of the asanas, or that some of your yogi pals use natural cleaners with essential oils for their mats. If you haven’t yet tried essential oils during your yoga sessions, there are a number of reasons to do so, so why not start?

Here are our favourite essential oils for yoga.

Peppermint oil. The invigorating, uplifting scent of peppermint is the perfect essential oil to use during yoga. It helps to promote breath awareness and clear breathing and can help you focus as you’re regulating your breathing. It is also well known for its ability to improve concentration and mental sharpness. To use it, rub a few drops on your chest or place 2 drops on your tongue and rub under your nose. Just remember to make sure that scents are not prohibited at your studio before using.

Tea tree and eucalyptus oils. Our favourite way to use these two powerful oils when it comes to yoga is with a DIY yoga mat cleaner. Because both of these oils have powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, they can be used to make an effective, yet totally chemical-free, yoga mat spray cleanser. Lavender oil. After you’ve finished your session and cleaned your mat, use lavender oil for calming. Try pacing a few drops of it on a warm wash cloth and draping it over the eyes to calm the senses and the mind. Another great way to get the calming effects is with a diffuser – just add your lavender oil, sit back, and relax. To soothe sore muscles, use lavender oil in a warm bath or simply massage it in gently. It has some serious healing powers and your body will thank you!
