A Question of Quality: Why the Quality of Essential Oils is Important

As a provider of essential oils, we often get asked about quality and how it is determined. This is not surprising to us, as there are a number of variations on quality when it comes to the various oils out there. When you’re looking to these oils for your health and home, the quality of essential oils is important. So, how can you tell if you’re getting the best of the best?

One of the simplest ways to ensure that the quality is top-notch is by looking at how they are tested. One of the best ways to test the quality of an essential oil is through GC/MS lab testing. GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) testing breaks down the various constituents of an essential oil for analysis. This testing can identify purity and determine is any alterations were made to the oil.

For an oil to be pure (and thus, of highest quality), no alterations should be done and no synthetics should be included. Another good indication of quality is if the oils are slowly steam distilled and no hexane, alcohol or cold is used in the extraction process to ensure the highest quality and purity of the oils.

Does organic signify highest quality? We’re come across this question too. While organic, for many alternative health products, is often important, with essential oils, being organic is really not the best indicator of quality.  Many ‘organic’ essential oils have been found to contain residues, or had been standardized or adulterated, and did not meet the active terpene components published in international standards. Additionally, other ‘organic’ oils have been packaged in clear glass bottles which quickly oxidizes the oils, thus causing the component properties to be lost.

Thursday Plantation essential oils are non-GMO and are tested as raw ingredients for pesticides. As finished products, they go through rigorous 28-day testing before they are released to the market.

As a standard of measurement of quality, the oils are tested to the British Pharmacopoeia monograph. This is the standard the TGA requires the oil to meet for use in medicines in Australia. The oil also complies with the Australian Standard and the International Standards monographs. The TGA’s requirements for testing are higher than those of Health Canada which is why we strongly stand by our oils as being of the highest quality.

Thursday Plantation has been a trusted brand of essential oils around the world for over 40 years. Our quality speaks for itself.
