Lavender Oil Benefits for Natural Healing

Back in the day, the Romans used to rely on lavender oil to keep their clothes, bedding, even their hair smelling fresh. They relied on it for its healing properties. Ancient Egyptians even used it to anoint their dead. Today, most of us probably don’t use it in our traditional ceremonies, but the other two categories haven’t lost momentum. Lavender oil, called the most versatile of all essential oils, is a big player on the natural healing spectrum, and for good reason.

Lavender oil is derived from, yes, you guessed it, the flower spikes of lavender. The distillation process involves harvesting the oil, and the resulting oil is colourless with the distinct lavender scent.

Today, many of the same medicinal benefits enjoyed by the Romans are still popular – and many more have been discovered, much to our advantage. Here are just a few:

  • Aching muscles: add some Epsom salts and a few drops of lavender oil to the bath and soak away the tension.
  • Stress and anxiety: apply lavender oil neat to your temples or rub a few drops together in your palms and breathe in the calming scent.
  • Headache: make a hot compress using a piece of cloth soaked in hot cold water and a few drops of lavender oil and apply to the forehead, or massage a few drops into the forehead, temples and neck.
  • Insomnia: place a tissue with a few drops of lavender in your pillowcase or add a few drops to your diffuser.
  • Nail fungus: apply lavender oil to nails infected with fungus to moisturize and heal while the new nail grows out.
  • Bug bites: if you’re too late to repel, dab some lavender oil on the affected areas to sooth the itch and the inflammation.
  • Sunburn: add some lavender oil to a lukewarm bath and soak to reduce swelling and soothe the burnt areas.
  • Burns: after you have cooled the burn with cold water, apply lavender oil to help relieve pain and prevent scarring.
  • Room refresher: revitalize old potpourri by adding a few drops of lavender oil.
  • Earaches: warm lavender oil in your hands and then massage it into the skin behind ears, over the temples, and on the sides of the throat to relieve an earache.
  • Motion sickness: massage a few drops into your temples to reduce nausea.
