Best Essential Oils for Common Skin Conditions

When it comes to the skin, there are so many different things that can happen: dry skin, itching, rashes, acne…the list goes on and on. Often we head to the pharmacy when one of these conditions pops up, but sometimes the best remedy isn’t the chemical kind. This week we are talking the best essential oils for common skin conditions – read on.

By far, the most common skin condition people suffer from is acne. Acne is caused by the buildup of oil in your pores, which then feeds bacteria in the pores, leading to infection. Those infections result in the unsightly, red, irritating spots. One of the best essential oils – and very well-known remedies – for acne is tea tree oil. Find a facial cleanser and moisturizer containing tea tree oil, or use tea tree oil as a topical application all on its own.

Eczema. Eczema is a term generally applied to any type of skin inflammation. It can express itself in a number of ways and its symptoms are different from person to person. The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but eucalyptus oil has been shown to be an effective treatment for pain relief and inflammation of the skin. Combine eucalyptus oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil and apply to the affected area.

Dry, dehydrated skin. Whether weather-related or just a symptom of your skin’s natural makeup, dry skin can be a pain – literally. Lavender essential oil is an absolute must-have when it comes to dry skin. It helps to hydrate dry skin and is especially effective in the winter months and cold weather climates in keeping your skin moist and healthy. Rose hip oil is another essential oil which is great for moisturizing dry skin.

Shingles. Also known as herpes zoster, shingles is a viral infection of the nerve and the skin surrounding it. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same one responsible for chicken pox. A great, all natural, way to treat shingles is with tea tree oil and lavender oil. Mix 10-20 drops of each together in a bowl of hot or cold water, then soak a cloth and apply it to the affected area as a hot compress.

Sunburn. If you’ve spent too much time in the sun without sunscreen and are now feeling the burn, literally, combine 20 drops of lavender oil with 4 ounces of aloe vera gel and dab it on your burn. This will help soothe the pain and heal the wounded skin.

If you suffer from any of the above common skin conditions and are looking for an alternative to the traditional remedies, these essential oils are a great place to start.
