Back to School Basics: Scalp Care for Kids

The summer is coming to a close and the kids are back at school. That means, as parents, we are back to the grind of helping with homework, prepping school lunches, and ensuring everyone is up and out of the house on time. For many parents, this is a fair trade off (we know many of you silently celebrate when September rolls around)!

That being said, back to school also means the added pain of keeping a close eye on your child’s head. As parents, we know how hard it is to keep on top of kids’ scalp care – with all of whispered secrets, hat or brush sharing, even the sleepovers – there’s often no way to avoid the sharing of other things! So, instead of worrying about the transfer of, well, whatever, why not use a child-friendly hair care line that protects your kids scalp in addition to cleaning the hair and making it look great?

When it comes to your kids, you want something that’s natural – chemicals need not apply. A child’s scalp is more sensitive that an adult’s, so you can’t just use any old shampoo. This young skin can be sensitive to synthetic perfumes, colours, preservatives, heavy film-forming conditioners and aggressive surfactants. Additionally, a child’s skin and scalp produces almost six times less oil on a daily basis than an adult’s skin. Without that oil barrier, the ability of a child’s skin and scalp to absorb synthetic chemicals, artificial preservatives and in some cases natural chemicals is far greater than an adult and may interfere with their natural hormonal development. No one wants that for their child.

So, what is the alternative? Look for something that is created specifically for that sensitive skin! Something that uses natural ingredients that won’t damage the balance of natural oils is perfect.

Start with a shampoo that is rich in pure Australian essential oils such as eucalyptus and tea tree oils. Follow up with a leave-in conditioner that is rich in plant-derived moisturizers such as aloe vera. You can even get stylish with a shaping paste to get the look kids want – one that also nourishes the hair thanks to ingredients such as lemon myrtle and peppermint oil.

Don’t just take our word for it – check out what others had to say about our line of scalp-friendly kid’s products, eco.kid!

  • Healthy Holistic Living: “We scrubbed, lathered and rubbed our way through the first bath with TLC Hypo Allergenic Body Wash and Shampoo and I have to say I loved it. But the real test was whether or not my daughter liked it, and she did.” http://www.healthy-holistic-living.com/ecokid.html
  • Bored Mommy: “After using the products on both the kids, I was sold. The scents weren’t too strong in any way, and my four year old loved the lemony smell of the Shampoo. I didn’t need to use a lot of the product in order to create a good lather and really wash their hair thoroughly.” http://boredmommyblog.com/2011/03/31/eco-kid-organics-for-kids-review-giveaway/

The entire line of eco.kid products is organic and biologically friendly, so you know you’re protecting your kids and the environment.
